creating visuals for motion media: Style Frames

In motion media, a style frame is a single, static image that serves as a visual reference for the overall look and feel of a project, such as an animation, video, or film. Style frames are often created during the pre-production phase to establish the visual design, color palette, composition, and mood of the final piece.

The style frames depicted below were created for motion-design and show the wide array of visual tools I can employ to create captivating visuals.

text to motion: sylvia plath

Sylvia Plath, a renowned American poet, left an indelible mark on the literary world with her hauntingly introspective works. Although her life was tragically cut short at the age of 30, Plath's legacy lives on through her powerful verses, which explore themes of mental anguish, femininity, and existential struggles. Plath's ability to fuse personal experiences with universal truths makes her a timeless figure in literature, whose haunting words continue to resonate with audiences to this day.

Her famous quote from “The Bell Jar” was an important part of my late teen years, with her work inspiring much of my own art I made at that time. Returning to the quote in graduate school, these style frames capture the essence of Plath’s chaotic but vibrant nature, showing her strong imagery and thought-like prose.

STORYBOARDING AND PROCESS

First, the text was storyboarded. Because of it’s strong imagery, of the quote which depicts a fig tree, I decided to push the boundaries of the style frames by using multiple physical means of manipulation. This included using block cutting to make stamps that represented the importance of time as a concept. It also used a book of my own contained Sylvia Plath’s journal entries and notes, manipulated through scanning and layering with other textures and my own hands, and then brought digitally onto the computer. From there, photoshop was used to construct the final style frames.
