Reimagined For Sustainability

The Cereal Box

Rethinking the life cycle of the Kellogg's Frosted Flakes cereal box.

After full analysis of the material components of the cereal box and assessment of their environmental impacts, we strove to create a low-impact product, one that recognizes the reality of the market today and the opportunities for behavioral change in the user's future. Our two new concepts of cereal box will help to bridge the gap from where we are now to closed-loop system of cereal production.

Component and Lifecycle Analysis

We began by breaking down the components of the cereal box and studying the lifecycle of each one. By knowing what and how these components are made, we were able to pinpoint the most significant impacts and redesign the process accordingly. To see more details about the processes of each part, please see the complete project at the bottom of the page.

 Concept One

For our first concept, we focused on the ways in which we would change the physical materials of the box while keeping cost low for Kellog’s, as much of it could be done within their current facilities and infrastructure. This redesign had a 25% improvement from the current model.

 Concept Two

For our second concept, we imagined bigger. We focused on the behavioral change aspect, for both the company and the consumer. While more difficult to enact, we hoped that with Kellog’s size and scope, they would be able to enact true change and be a leader in sustainability.

Final Lifecycle Analysis

The final life cycle comparison showed the benefits of our redesigns of the cereal box, improving them by both 25% and 99%. As even marginal changes to the lifecycle impact make a difference when scaled up, this shows how viable truly transformational opportunities are when behavioral change can be imagined.
